Preparing to sow the new season crop

Saturday April 13 2013

Right now there is much activity at Woodlands Hill farm, as we are preparing to sow the new season crop.

It is a busy time for us.  Some of this activity includes:

Each type of grain that will be planted for this season has been planned for a long time.  This is called the ‘rotation’.

Some types of grain may be planned 3 years in advance.  This is determined by what is the most sustainable way to keep production consistent in each paddock for different types of grains.  Grain type is also decided by the price of the markets.

The Sunset Plains region has been generally very dry since August 2012.

This means the moisture reserves in the soil are very low.  This is not preferred.  However, the paddocks are clean from weeds.  This is good.

The rain prediction for next few days is 1 – 5mm.  We are hoping that a dry summer means a wet winter.

Let’s see what happens!
